Are people joining ISIS for money? ISIS defector explains

Despite the atrocities caused by the ISIS people are still joining them in their numbers, is this solidly because of religion or there are some other reasons why the membership is rising on daily basis? The ISIS defector Abu Khaled have something to say about that.

The defector Abu Khaled said a large number of the group fighters joined for reasons having little to do with religion, but most people joined because they need money. After joining the militants you are been paid in US dollars instead of Syrian liras. ISIS also run its own currency exchange.

They pay for your rent and all bills attached to it, if you are married they pay your wife's and children allowance as well. If you still have parents, you get paid for that, literally a welfare state.

I knew a mason who worked construction. He used to get 1,000 lira per day. That's nothing, " Abu Khaled told Weiss that " Now he's joined ISIS and gets 35,000 lira - $100 for himself, $50 for his wife, $35 for his kids. He makes $600 to $700 per month. He gave up masonry, he's just a fighter now, but he joined for the money".
